About the Airport

History

Decatur Municipal Airport, founded in 1915, was the first airport in the state of Texas.  It is owned and operated by the City of Decatur, and is a public-use general aviation airport in Wise County, Texas.  The airport, which now occupies more than 205 acres of land, is situated approximately 1 mile north of Decatur.  The airport operates on asphalt runway, Runway 17 / 35, measuring 4,200 feet in length and 60 feet in width.


The direct output attributable to the airport is estimated to be over $4.9 million.  Additionally 2,200 general aviation visitors arrive at the airport each year, supporting nine visitor-related jobs and $184,000 in payroll.  General aviation visitors are also responsible for $292,000 in direct economic output.


When combined, the general aviation tenants and visitors at the airport are responsible for over $9.9 million in total economic output, 100 jobs, and more than $3.5 million in payroll.


Facility Upgrades
Decatur Municipal Airport is the oldest non-contiguous airport in Texas.  Some of the recently completed upgrades at the airport include a new terminal building, runway extensions and rehabilitation, and the installation of an automated weather observing system (AWOS).
