The goal of this program is to reduce the incidents of fires, injuries, and damage caused by fires each year. To achieve this goal, Decatur Fire Department uses a mobile "classroom" designed to resemble a house including a living room, kitchen, and bedroom. The lesson takes children from room to room teaching fire safety through a combination of lectures and hands-on exercises. In addition to educational props used during the lessons, the safety house features simulated "smoke". Safety lessons include crawling low under smoke, exiting bedroom windows, the importance of functioning smoke detectors, and how to recognize fire hazards in the home. The demonstration gives people of all ages the knowledge they need to not only prevent fires, but the steps to follow to safely escape a fire. The trailer is used at city events and visits to school classrooms.
